Javas with Rose

So Its a wonderful morning here in Rochester and I am sitting here with my friend Rose working on our websites.

Its interesting to see how our friendship has grown since we first met. She had been teaching at the creative workshop and I had been taking classes. We both ended up taking a workshop with a gentleman that taught surface decoration. I wanted to learn about screen prints on clay but he taught other surface techniques. Anyways, here was this woman with a sunny personality, big laugh, and big thick curly black hair. she introduced herself and I did her. we had both heard of each other through other potters at the workshop but hadn't met until then. A few weeks or months later she would ask me if I would be willing to volunteer and help with her young adult class, pretty much teenage kids. I said yes and we proceeded to say ghostbuster jokes and other pop culture movie references while helping kids throw on the wheel, build bird house, and glaze countless of pots.

Rose has been a big part of developing me as a teacher and as a potter. her centering technique I still teach today along with a bunch of other helpful hints that I pass off to my students. eventually I would be offered a job to teach kid classes, then some teen classes, ELC classes, and eventually I would teach adult classes, intro to throwing and pottery for everyone. All the while maintaining the student aspect when Rose and the other advanced potters Paul and Shelly, would give any advice, lesson, or critique. I treasure these times and education.

Now we sit here working on websites. As she has taught me so much in the past I am happy to help her out. I am no expert at creating websites but with just having built this one I am able to help her a little to develop hers. If you are interested check out Rotondicreations.com. I will most likely be doing a workshop or two there in the future.

All in all I am grateful for Rose and all the teachers/friends I have made over the years because of the clay. This community is so grounded, kind, nice, and understanding that I am proud to be part of it. Keep potting.

How many years has it been since that workshop where we met for the first time? I felt like I had known you forever! Funny the look on Shelly's face when we told her we had just met. Seems like a lifetime ago. So much growth. I appreciate your insight, outlook and approach to art and particularly ceramics. Thanks for your help and patience with my ineptness for technology. Oh, and BTW that picture... 😯

Love your face.
