Jasons Artist statement

I have been a tattoo artist for twenty years. My work is influenced by imagery of popular culture tattoo art. From old school Sailor Jerry tattoo flash, Japanese traditional, to more modern neotraditional has helped me develop my own personal vocabulary with carving into clay.  I either carve direct imagery such as flowers, birds, wind bars, or I may delve a little deeper with the images playing out a sarcastic symbolic story about my view on the world today. The reduction and removal of clay lets the subject matter of my desired come to life enticing the viewer to interact with the imagery that moves along the surface of the clay body.   I also have experience as a painter. I use a colorful pallet to express my thoughts and feelings of the greater scheme of things such as social issues, political views, and metaphysical ideas.  I was given an opportunity to learn body painting on the television show ‘Skin Wars Fresh Paint’ with Rue Paul.  Bodypainting as popular art form that works with the body not just as a body part as in tattooing but in the round. I have learned how to pull concepts and ideas around the human body even being able to camouflage a person into their background. A Graduating from Nazareth college with a bachelor’s in science Jason focused in fine arts while he was there and took the knowledge he learned and ran with it. Eventually he found himself at the Memorial art gallery’s creative workshop in Rochester NY not only taking ceramic classes but also teaching classes.  He is also a teacher’s assistant with the Expanded Learning Collaboration (ELC) program which brings local city school classes to the gallery showing the gallery work and bringing them down to the class room to work on 2d and 3d projects relating to what they just saw in the gallery.  He also shares a working ceramic studio with a fellow teacher from the creative workshop at the Hungerford building.  There on top of tattooing, pottery, and creating ceramic art he can give small classes and demonstrations to interested people or groups.
